About All India 2D Animation Hackathon

The FOSSEE and Spoken Tutorial projects based at IIT Bombay present you an online event, All India 2D Animation Hackathon using Synfig Studio which is a cross-platform free and open source vector-based 2D animation software designed to produce film-quality animation with minimum resources. So get started, avail this opportunity to upgrade your skills and enhance your career. We welcome newbies, veterans, high school students, college students, professionals, FLOSS enthusiasts, etc. to take part in this Hackathon.

What is All India 2D Animation Hackathon?

The participants have to create an original 2D animated short movie video of maximum of 3 mins duration using Synfig Studio. You should make the supporting graphics, audio, etc., using only open source software such as GIMP and Inkscape. You can make the narration in any of the 22 scheduled Indian languages:
1) Assamese, (2) Bengali, (3) Gujarati, (4) Hindi, (5) Kannada, (6) Kashmiri, (7) Konkani, (8) Malayalam, (9) Manipuri, (10) Marathi, (11) Nepali, (12) Oriya, (13) Punjabi, (14) Sanskrit, (15) Sindhi, (16) Tamil, (17) Telugu, (18) Urdu (19) Bodo, (20) Santhali, (21) Maithili and (22) Dogri.

Eligibility to participate

  1. Knowledge of basic graphics, designing and animation is required.
  2. Prior knowledge of using Synfig Studio to create 2D animation and other open source graphics software is beneficial.

Category-Team size and Composition

  • Participate as an individual or as a team (max. 2 members).
  • Ideally, a team can consist of individuals like: Synfig Studio user / animator / graphic designer / story narrator / video editor / etc.

Some Helpful Resources for Hackathon

  • Self learn Synfig Studio using Spoken Tutorial courses. These are available in English, Hindi, and 5 other Indian languages.
  • We require you to use ONLY Open Source software like GIMP, Audacity and Inkscape to create graphics or record audio, etc., for the animation. You can self learn these software using Spoken Tutorials.

Rules and Regulations

  • The decision of the review committee and organizers in declaring the results will be final. No queries in this regard will be entertained.
  • The same person can not participate in more than one team.
  • If a person is found participating in more than one team, both teams will be disqualified from the Hackathon.
  • Use ONLY Synfig Studio for creating animations. Create the supporting graphics, audio, etc. using only open source software. You are not allowed to use any proprietary software in your animation in any aspect. If found, you or your team will be disqualified.
  • The accepted submissions shall be released and published under open source license in the public domain. The copyright should be transferred to the FOSSEE project.
  • The team lead will be only one point of contact with the organizers.
  • Any participant found to be indulging in any form of malpractice will be immediately disqualified.
